About twenty years ago, my friend Bianca and her parents moved from Italy and became our neighbors. We have always shared our closest secrets just as if we were sisters. Bianca's most exciting news came about a year ago when she finally found a way to beat her weight problem by learning about food control and the food portions she ate each day.

Neither of Bianca's parents has ever gained extra weight and they could never fully understand the cause of her weight gain after she left home. They did rightly suspect though, that she had started eating larger portions her favorite Italian pizza and pasta more often and that these had started to show around her hips and stomach.

She married Joe and between her job and her family she was never able to lose weight for long, despite following every diet that came her way. In her unsuccessful pursuit of better health and the body shape she craved, she cut out fats, carbs, fiber and sugar at different times. Her focus was always on what she ate (or did not eat), never on the size of her food portions.

Bianca's decision about how to regain control of her weight came as she was preparing dinner one evening. She was done with diets that saw her shopping and preparing different food. She decided that the food she prepared for her family was nutritious and that she would eat it as they did, but in smaller portions.

The decision about the kind of food portions for her new healthy body did require some consideration and Bianca did some research about the finding of respected health authorities such as The American Diabetes Association, The American Heart Association and The American Medical Association. She noted that they all advocated weight loss through a balanced diet that provides all the body's nutrients.

And what about the size of her food portions? Bianca's dinner plates with their design around the lip and the blue circle just inside this provided the very straight forward answer. These plates with their decorative circle regulated her food portions at lunch and dinner and provided the limit of her portion control.

Her husband and sons continued to eat their usual meals to fuel their very active lives and Bianca's food portions of the same meal always fitted within the blue circle. She made a healthy start to the day with breakfast and snacked on small portions of fruit, nuts and vegetable sticks between meals.

Bianca started to lose weight and kept doing this across most of last year until she finally discovered the healthy, trim body that had left home all those years ago. As a result, she has altered her eating habits by taking control of her life and eating the European Way like her parents. She eats smaller food portions, indulges periodically, savors the taste of her food and enjoys meal times.

Bianca still revels at how amazingly straight forward her weight loss was and looks forward to a longer life where she will be less likely to develop heart disease, diabetes or suffer a stroke. She is an advocate of portion control of food as the solution to obesity and as a long term approach to maintaining a healthy body. She even includes some tiramisu as part of her food portions now and then to satisfy her insatiable sweet tooth!

Even the most earnest individuals who genuinely want to lose weight can fall into the trap of expecting to lose too much weight, too quickly. This mistake can diminish their capacity to stay on a calories loss diet and doom their chances for a long term, healthy weight loss. Including more than one way of measuring your weight loss means that you can remain encouraged when one slows down because the other is likely to continue to reflect your progress.

Include the number game in your weight loss goals to lose weight safely, healthily and to keep it off permanently with a recommended weight loss of 1-2 pounds each week, so that to lose 20 pounds will take you around 10 weeks. Determining a weight loss per week may seem constraining but if this weight loss rate is realistic you will be able to reach it and it will help you remain committed to your calories loss eating plan and your exercise routine. The journey towards permanent weight loss and good health is a reflection of the hare and the tortoise story where the slow and steady hare reached his ultimate goal!

To reach your 1-2 pound weight loss goal each week you need to reduce your daily calorie intake each day by around 500. To gauge this, use a calories counter and this will enable you to calculate a balanced menu that includes a range of foods from each of the major food groups. To lose weight the numbers need to stack up so knowing how many calories you consume and how many you use are the central numbers around which you should plan your calories loss menu and your exercise.

Set short term goals, but think of long term goals so set weight loss milestones and celebrate when you reach them. Buy yourself a new book when you lose 5 pounds, or a new dress when you hit 10 pounds lost. But even as you are celebrating each milestone, keep focused on the big picture and how much weight you want to lose in total. You need to celebrate your progress along the way but also stay focused on the big prize at the end because this will make your persistence to bring about a consistent calories loss worth the effort.

I have recently moved back to the cold harsh weather of England, after spending give or take 30 years in the south of Spain. My aim is to spread my gmuch respected Grandma's secret Sangria pleasures to my new work collegues and friends.

It has to be said that my Granny's Sangria is the very best around. You won't get better than it, she uses the best ingredients and although some people can afford the best, she can and she does. The outcome is the best ever. Amazing.

even after following my grandma's closely guarded reciepe to a T, I still cant manage to get it to taste like hers. I guess she just has the magic grandma touch.

I know that its good because she is famous in her town where she lives for her homemade recipe. She is the world's best, she really is.

Nowadays she makes it just for her family and friends but back in the day she used to setup a stall outside her local store.

she is so good that she even won a prestigious award for her creative skills, and now has that award on her mantle, her pride and joy.

when I visit her next summer, I will make sure she talks me through exactly how she makes it, for I am still nto getting it exactly right. I will let her sample mine, and give me some constructive critism, so I can let her legacy live on, even after she has moved on to the next world.

I want to be able to pass on her secrets and share them with millions of people. She will see how amazing she is when millions enjoy the Sangria.

Sangria is loved by the Spanish, and if made right it can be life changing to be honest. I know my Grandma will make your day, that is for sure!
